The Federal High Court of Nigeria sitting in Gombe has sentenced a 51-year-old man, Hamidu Damisa, to prison for child trafficking offences.

The court, presided over by H.I.O. Oshomah, found Damisa guilty after trial.

Damisa, a resident of Putuki Pargale in Balanga Local Government Area, was accused of selling a one-year-old boy, identified as Destiny, from Bogar Degri in the same council area.

The prosecuting counsel, Musa Yila Kopyo, told the court that the defendant was arraigned on a two-count charge bordering on child trafficking.

According to the prosecution, the first count was contrary to Section 13(1) and (2) of the Child Trafficking Law, 2015, while the second count alleged that Damisa attempted to sell the same child, an offence contrary to Section 29 of the law, as amended in 2015, and punishable under Section 21.

Damisa pleaded not guilty when the charges were read to him.

During the trial, the prosecution called two witnesses, including the convict’s wife, who testified in the matter.

After reviewing the evidence and submissions from both parties, Justice Oshomah convicted and sentenced Damisa in line with the provisions of the Child Trafficking Law.
