The Cross River State Command of the Nigeria Police Force has advised St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Katchuan Iruan, Boki LGA, to hire private security personnel to protect its property.

In the early hours of Thursday, around 3 a.m., unidentified individuals broke into the church and set parts of it on fire, destroying important documents. The assailants also torched the priest’s Lexus 350 and a Toyota Corolla parked on the premises.

The police further recommended that the church fence its compound to prevent future attacks.

On Friday, the state Commissioner of Police, Rashid Afegbua, instructed the Area Commander of Ikom, along with tactical units from Ikom and Ogoja Area Commands, to conduct an on-site assessment and patrol in Katchuan to reassure the church and local residents.

Reverend Father Euna Esibu M., Vice Chairman of the Parish Council, confirmed the arson and emphasized that church members maintain peaceful relations with the wider community.

Although the suspects remain unidentified, the police stated that a manhunt has been launched to bring them to justice. ASP Eitiokpa Sunday Akata, the Police Public Relations Officer, said, “We have advised the Reverend Father to fence the premises and employ security personnel to safeguard the property,” adding that strategic measures are ongoing to apprehend the perpetrators.
