On Sunday, the U.S. military reported that three service members were killed and five seriously wounded during the operation against Iran, marking the first U.S. casualties announced.
The United States launched extensive strikes against Iran on Saturday, killing its supreme leader, with attacks continuing into Sunday.
“Three U.S. service members have been killed in action and five are seriously wounded as part of Operation Epic Fury. Several others sustained minor shrapnel injuries and concussions and are being returned to duty,” said U.S. Central Command (CENTCOM) in a statement.
“Major combat operations continue, and our response efforts are ongoing. The situation remains fluid. Out of respect for the families, additional details, including the identities of the fallen, will be withheld until 24 hours after next of kin have been notified.”
U.S. air and naval forces, alongside Israeli forces, are conducting heavy bombardments against Iran. President Donald Trump stated that the objective is to dismantle the country’s military capabilities.
In retaliation, Iran has launched missiles at targets in Israel and U.S. military installations in the region.
Earlier on Sunday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards claimed they had struck the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln in the Gulf with four ballistic missiles. CENTCOM, however, confirmed that the carrier “was not hit.”
“The missiles launched didn’t come close. The Lincoln continues to launch aircraft in support of CENTCOM’s ongoing mission to protect the American people by neutralizing threats from the Iranian regime,” the statement added.
