Osun State University (UNIOSUN) has received full accreditation from the Medical and Dental Council of Nigeria (MDCN), allowing it to officially graduate medical students.

The announcement was made during a visit to the Government House in Osogbo by the Registrar of the Council, Prof. Fatimah Kyari, and her accreditation team. Governor Ademola Adeleke welcomed the news, praising the achievement and pledging continued support to elevate the university’s academic standards. A statement by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, confirmed the governor’s remarks.

Represented by the Deputy Registrar, Dr. Nnaemeka Nwakanma, Prof. Kyari commended Governor Adeleke for providing essential equipment and infrastructure, which enabled the College of Medicine to earn full accreditation in just seven years. Dr. Nwakanma noted that Adeleke’s leadership had significantly advanced the university in only three years, culminating in the accreditation milestone.

“This team has granted final full accreditation to the medical school. Achieving this was no small feat,” he said, adding that the MDCN has consistently maintained high standards in medical training since its inception in 1963.

Dr. Nwakanma further highlighted that UNIOSUN’s current medical student admission quota of 150 places it on par with established universities such as the University of Lagos and other major institutions in Nigeria. He emphasized that quotas are determined based on manpower, laboratory facilities, hospital infrastructure, and the institution’s capacity to train competent medical professionals.

Governor Adeleke expressed delight at the accreditation, promising that his administration would continue supporting UNIOSUN. He also pledged to double the university’s admission capacity for medical programs ahead of the next accreditation cycle. The governor lamented the ongoing brain drain of Nigerian medical professionals and called for efforts to create a more conducive working environment in the country.

UNIOSUN has steadily grown its medical training capacity, including the establishment of the Modupe and Folorunso Alakija Medical Research and Training Hospital in Osogbo, donated by philanthropist Mrs. Folorunso Alakija. The hospital was formally handed over to the university during a ceremony at Famfa Towers, Ikoyi, Lagos, attended by the Pro-Chancellor, Prof. Wale Oladipo, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Clement Adebooye, and representatives of the donor family, including Mr. Dele Alakija.

The donation underscores UNIOSUN’s commitment to advancing healthcare education in Nigeria and providing state-of-the-art training facilities for future medical professionals.
