Premier League side Chelsea F.C. head coach Liam Rosenior has said he will seek clarification from the referees’ governing body following an unusual incident involving referee Paul Tierney before Saturday’s match against Newcastle United F.C..

Tierney was positioned over the ball at the halfway line ahead of kick-off while Chelsea’s players assembled for their customary pre-match huddle.

Instead of stepping aside, the referee remained in place, briefly finding himself surrounded by the players as they carried out their team talk.

The moment sparked a playful reaction from Cole Palmer, who jokingly put his arms around the referee before giving him a puzzled look.

Teammates Trevoh Chalobah and Enzo Fernández looked on with amusement as Tierney smiled back.

As reported by BBC Sport on Saturday, after Chelsea’s 1-0 defeat, Rosenior said he intends to speak with Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) to understand why the referee chose to remain in the middle of the huddle.

“I’ll be speaking to PGMOL and the referees to get an understanding of why that happened today.

“That incident had absolutely no relevance to me,” Howe said. “I was completely unconcerned about it. I don’t focus on things like that. It’s not going to determine whether we win or lose the game.”

Newcastle eventually secured a narrow victory, but the unusual pre-match moment involving the referee became one of the major talking points after the match. ⚽
