The ‘Finalissima’ clash between Spain national football team and Argentina national football team, scheduled for March 27 in Qatar, has been cancelled, UEFA announced on Sunday.

The European football governing body said the decision followed failed efforts to agree on a new date and venue after the Middle East war disrupted plans to stage the match in the region.

In a statement, UEFA said it was “not possible to reach an agreement with Argentina” on an alternative schedule and location.

“It is a source of great disappointment to UEFA and the organisers that circumstances and timing have denied the teams of the chance to compete for this prestigious prize in Qatar,” the statement read.

The Finalissima traditionally pits the winners of the Copa America against the champions of the European Championship. Argentina won the inaugural edition in 2022, defeating Italy national football team at Wembley Stadium.

Later that year, Argentina captain Lionel Messi led his country to victory at the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar.

The proposed match against Spain would also have marked the first meeting between Messi—widely regarded as one of the greatest footballers of all time—and teenage star Lamine Yamal, whom many see as a future successor at FC Barcelona.

UEFA initially proposed staging the match at Santiago Bernabéu Stadium in Madrid, but Argentina rejected the plan.

A subsequent proposal for a two-legged tie—with the first match in Madrid on March 27 and a return leg in Buenos Aires before the 2028 European Championship and Copa America—was also declined.

UEFA later suggested a one-off match at another neutral European venue on March 27 or March 30, but Argentina indicated it could not play on the original date and was only available on March 31.

“As a result, and to UEFA’s regret, this edition of the Finalissima has been cancelled,” UEFA added.
