Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori has directed all political appointees who intend to contest elective positions in the 2027 general elections to resign on or before March 31, 2026.

The directive was contained in a statement signed by the Secretary to the State Government, Kingsley Eze Emu, and published on the state government’s official platform on Monday.

According to the statement, the order aligns with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable released by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for party primaries ahead of the 2027 elections.

It added that the resignation requirement applies to all political appointees seeking party nominations or planning to participate in the primaries.

The directive affects commissioners, advisers, directors-general, executive assistants, senior special assistants, special assistants, personal assistants, and other political appointees in the state.

“The directive is in line with Section 88(1) of the Electoral Act, 2026, as well as the timetable issued by the Independent National Electoral Commission for party primaries ahead of the 2027 general elections,” the statement read.

It added that all affected appointees are required to submit their resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government on or before the stipulated deadline.

“The affected officials are required to submit their formal resignation letters through the Office of the Secretary to the State Government not later than March 31, 2026, and hand over to the Permanent Secretary or the most senior career officer in their respective Ministries, Departments, and Agencies,” the statement added.

The government urged all affected appointees to take note of the directive and ensure strict compliance.

The development comes amid rising political activities ahead of the 2027 general elections, as several states move to regulate the participation of serving appointees in partisan politics.
