Nigerian businessman and chairman of the cubana group, obinna iyiegbu, popularly known as obi cubana, has responded to public reactions following his recent comments in enugu state.
the socialite stated at a city boy movement event in enugu that the group’s main aim is to promote the development of igbo land through strategic federal engagement and to enlighten southeasterners on the need to support president bola tinubu’s re-election bid.
reacting to the backlash in an interview with bbc igbo on monday, iyiegbu said his remarks were either misunderstood or intentionally taken out of context.
he added that his speech, which lasted over three minutes, was trimmed into a short clip, misrepresented, and shared with what he described as malicious intent.
“My remarks may have been intentionally misinterpreted. i had no intention of offending ndigbo. i spoke מתוך concern and a genuine desire for progress, and i remain firmly committed to the unity and development of our people,” he said.
he emphasized that his comments were not meant to belittle the igbo people but to draw attention to important issues such as civic engagement, patience, and a clearer understanding of governance.
according to him, his intention was to express concern and promote progress, noting that his remarks were meant to encourage greater participation of the southeast in governance to prevent marginalization in national development.
The businessman reiterated that in a democratic society, individuals should have the freedom to associate and support political candidates of their choice without fear or intimidation.
he warned against promoting divisive narratives, noting that giving excessive attention to a few opposing voices could weaken unity and hinder collective progress.
iyiegbu also cautioned against a mob mentality, where a small group seeks to influence public opinion through narratives that may spark division and tension within the community.
he referenced recent activities of the city boy movement, including an event in owerri, imo state, as examples of peaceful civic participation.
“activities of the city boy movement will always remain non-violent,” he said, adding that this approach shows political engagement can stay peaceful despite differing opinions.
reaffirming his ties to igboland, obi cubana highlighted his long-standing contributions to the region’s economic and social growth, stressing that his commitment remains steadfast.
“as a proud son of the soil, everything i have said and done has always been aimed at promoting progress, peace, and prosperity for ndigbo,” he stated.
He urged ndi igbo both at home and in the diaspora to stay united and resist misinterpretations that could cause division, encouraging a stronger focus on collaboration and a shared vision for regional development.
obi cubana concluded by expressing confidence in the resilience and entrepreneurial spirit of the igbo people, calling for ongoing dialogue, mutual respect, and collective responsibility as key drivers of sustainable growth.
