The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), Ogun Sector Command, has reported a decline in road crash fatalities in the first quarter of 2026, even as traffic violations surged significantly within the same period.
Sector Commander Akinwunmi Fasakin disclosed on Friday that 80 persons lost their lives in road crashes between January and March 2026, a reduction from the 98 deaths recorded in the corresponding period of 2025.
He added that the number of injured persons also dropped from 488 to 366, while those involved in crashes declined from 1,582 to 1,172, indicating improved road safety outcomes across the state.
“These figures reflect the impact of intensified enforcement and sustained interventions across the state,” Fasakin said.
Despite the progress, the FRSC expressed concern over a sharp rise in traffic violations. Detected offences increased from 7,647 in 2025 to 11,717 in 2026, while the number of offenders apprehended rose from 6,822 to 9,661.
“Statistics show a surge in detected offences, which calls for greater responsibility among road users,” the sector commander noted.
Fasakin emphasised the need for sustained public enlightenment to encourage safer road habits and compliance with traffic regulations. “We must continue public education at all levels to instill a culture of safety,” he said.
He also highlighted key achievements by the command, including the construction of a standard quarter guard and the asphalting of its premises, aimed at improving operational efficiency.
The FRSC boss, however, called for increased funding and enhanced capacity-building initiatives to further strengthen enforcement and sustain the reduction in road crashes across Ogun State.
