An 85-year-old man, Malam Isah Abdullahi, has been sentenced to 14 years’ imprisonment for rape by a High Court sitting in the Gwarzo Division of Kano State.

The Kano State Ministry of Justice secured the conviction after successfully prosecuting the defendant before High Court No. 24.

The offence was committed on November 30, 2024, in Sauna, Gabasawa Local Government Area.

In a statement issued by the ministry’s spokesman, Najib Lawn Dambazau, the prosecution presented sufficient evidence to prove the case beyond a reasonable doubt.

Delivering judgment, the trial judge, Justice Aisha Mahmud, found the defendant guilty and sentenced him to 14 years in prison.

The court, however, considered a plea for leniency by the defence counsel before pronouncing the sentence.

The case was prosecuted by the Solicitor-General and Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Justice, Salisu Muhammad Tahir, alongside members of his team.
