OYO POLICE ARREST SUSPECTED KIDNAPPER, RECOVER AK-47 RIFLE

The Oyo State Police Command has apprehended a suspected kidnapper, identified as Muhammadu Abubakar, and recovered an AK-47 rifle in Ikoyi-Ile, Oriire Local Government Area.

According to the Police spokesperson, Olayinka Ayanlade, in a statement released on Sunday in Ibadan, the state capital, the police received intelligence that three armed men, carrying an AK-47 rifle and other weapons, were seen moving around forests and farmland in the area.

Responding to the report, a joint team of officers led by the Divisional Police Officer of Ikoyi-Ile Division conducted a thorough search of the surrounding bushes, successfully locating and apprehending the suspect while recovering illegal firearms.

Ayanlade stated that Abubakar confessed to multiple kidnapping incidents along the Ogbomoso–Ikoyi-Ile axis and is cooperating with ongoing investigations.

The state Commissioner of Police, Olugbenga Abimbola, ordered that the suspect be transferred to the state Criminal Investigation Department for further discreet and detailed investigation, while a manhunt continues for the remaining members of the gang.

The spokesperson commended the officers involved for their dedication to intelligence-led policing, highlighting the importance of timely public information.

“The Oyo State Police Command wishes to inform the public of the successful arrest of a notorious kidnapper and recovery of a firearm through a coordinated, intelligence-led operation involving security agencies,” the statement read.

Ayanlade explained that the suspect was arrested with an AK-47 rifle (breach number 6628/2274), six rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, and three live cartridges. He further noted that the operation underscores the critical role of community cooperation in combating crime.

The police urged residents to continue providing credible and timely information, stressing that strong community partnerships are vital to maintaining safety.

The command reaffirmed its commitment to eliminating violent crimes such as kidnapping and banditry, assuring the public that it will deploy all necessary resources and strategies to protect lives, maintain law and order, and ensure a safe environment for law-abiding citizens.
