The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Bauchi State has defended Governor Bala Mohammed’s cautious approach to joining the African Democratic Congress (ADC), following his recent announcement of plans to defect from the party.

Speaking with The Media on Sunday, the state PDP Publicity Secretary, Dayyabu Chiroma, said the governor’s delay stems from ongoing consultations, as he carefully weighs his options to avoid a wrong political move.

Governor Mohammed, who previously supported the Tanimu Turaki-led faction of the PDP, had his backing validated by both the high court and the Court of Appeal, which voided the convention that brought in the rival leadership. The party subsequently approached the Supreme Court for a final ruling.

Chiroma explained that the governor had set up a committee to examine the political landscape and recommend the best course ahead of the 2027 elections. “Our leader, the governor, is concerned about his people. He is not going to make a decision that will hurt us. The hesitation may be due to ongoing consultations,” he said.

The committee, chaired by Deputy Governor Auwal Jatau and including representatives from the state and national assemblies, commissioners, party executives, and local government officials, is tasked with assessing whether to remain in the PDP or defect, and if so, to which political platform.

“The committee’s outcome—whether for defection or against it—and possibly the choice of political party, is what we are waiting for. For now, we are still together in the PDP,” Chiroma added.

Governor Mohammed, who expressed a preference for the ADC amid ongoing deliberations, revealed that efforts to engage the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) were unsuccessful. Following this, APC leaders, including National Chairman Prof Nentawe Yilwatda and Kano State Governor Abba Yusuf, visited him to discuss political alignment.

Confirming the formation of the exit committee on Saturday after a stakeholders’ meeting at the Government House, Bauchi State PDP Chairman Samaila Burga emphasized that the panel’s mandate is to explore all options and recommend the best strategy to serve the collective interest of party members and the state.

The Secretary to the State Government, Umar Sani, is to serve as the committee secretary, ensuring broad-based representation and inclusivity in the decision-making process.
