The death toll from Saturday’s attack by suspected armed herdsmen on Agena community in Mbalom, Gwer East LGA, Benue State, has risen to 11, following the discovery of two additional bodies.

Earlier reports had confirmed nine fatalities by Sunday afternoon. The raid also left one person injured, while homes, food storage barns, and the local market were set ablaze, causing widespread destruction throughout the community.

A local resident said the attackers, numbering over 50, appeared to have carried out a coordinated operation. They struck around 5 a.m., when most residents were asleep, quietly entering the village before setting fire to buildings and opening fire on anyone in their path.

On Monday, community mobiliser Christopher Gbasha, who participated in the search, confirmed the latest findings: “Two more corpses have been discovered, bringing the total to 11. There are no further casualties, but residents are terrified and have fled the village. Youths are now guarding the area, while women and children remain outside for safety.”

He added that the Benue State Government, through the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA), conducted a site assessment and documented the destruction. “They recorded the situation and took inventory of the damage. The area is calm now,” Gbasha said.
