Real Betis battled back to claim a 1-1 draw in their Europa League quarter-final first leg against Braga at the Estadio Municipal on Wednesday.

Braga took an early lead in the fifth minute when Austrian midfielder Florian Grillitsch flicked a deft near-post backheel past Betis goalkeeper Pau Lopez following a low corner delivery.

Betis struggled to break down the home side in the first half, with Braga goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek producing a string of excellent saves to deny attempts from Marc Bartra, Abde Ezzalzouli, and Cucho Hernandez.

The deadlock was finally broken in the 61st minute when Colombian striker Hernandez converted a penalty after Jean-Baptiste Gorby brought down Ezzalzouli in the box, sending Braga’s goalkeeper the wrong way.

The result leaves the tie finely balanced ahead of the second leg in Seville next Thursday.

Elsewhere, Thursday’s quarter-final first legs feature Nottingham Forest traveling to Portugal to face entity[“sports_team”,”Porto”,”Portuguese Primeira Liga”], Aston Villa visiting Bologna, and Freiburg hosting Celta Vigo.
