Dangote Sugar Refinery Plc has issued a strict warning to its staff at its Numan operations in Adamawa State, prohibiting the chewing of company-owned sugarcane within its premises.

The directive was contained in an internal circular dated April 7, 2026, and signed by the Head of Human Resources, Ikechukwu Okorie, who described the act as gross misconduct.

In the circular titled “Final Warning on Chewing of Company Sugar Cane,” the management stressed that the practice amounts to a violation of company policy and could attract summary disciplinary action.

It further stated that indiscriminate disposal of chewed cane remnants was negatively affecting the company’s environment and undermining housekeeping standards.

“The Cane is Company’s property with great value/cost attached to it,” the circular added.

“Chewing cane and dropping the chaffs indiscriminately is degrading the company environment and it is messing up our housekeeping efforts.”

The management also emphasised the need to maintain high hygiene standards, noting that the facility operates within the food industry.

“DSR-NUMAN is a food Industry that needs excellent housekeeping. So and littering of chewed cane chaffs is NOT allowed,” it stated.

As part of enforcement measures, the company said its security unit had been placed on high alert and directed to apprehend any staff found violating the directive.

“In this regard, the Security apparatus is on red alert and has been mandated to arrest anybody caught chewing company sugar cane and the perpetrators will be subjected to disciplinary action and prosecuted accordingly to recover the loss of this very important company asset,” the circular added.
