The Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, appears to be moving closer to declaring his ambition for the Abia State governorship ahead of the 2027 elections, amid growing pressure from political leaders and support groups across the state.

If he eventually contests on the platform of the All Progressives Congress, he is expected to face incumbent governor Alex Otti of the Labour Party.

Stakeholders from Isiala Ngwa North and South Federal Constituency have joined others calling on Kalu to run, describing him as a unifying figure capable of repositioning Abia State.

According to a statement by his aide, Udora Orizu, the calls form part of a broader mobilisation within the Ngwa bloc, a major political base in the state, where community leaders have reportedly endorsed him as their preferred candidate.

The endorsement came during the inauguration of the Ikeoha Movement and the declaration of interest by Uzoma Ihuka to contest for the House of Representatives seat under the APC.

Reacting to the growing calls, Kalu acknowledged the support but said he would announce his decision at the appropriate time, adding that he intends to make any formal declaration at the state capital, Umuahia.

He urged supporters to await an official invitation, noting that he would respond after hearing their collective demand at a central gathering.

Kalu also expressed confidence in the administration of President Bola Tinubu, saying its policies have strengthened the APC and positioned it for greater electoral success.

He assured party members of inclusive leadership and a people-focused approach, emphasising the party’s commitment to addressing grassroots concerns.

His rising political profile comes amid increasing rivalry with Governor Otti, particularly over governance priorities and development strategies in the state.

In recent months, Kalu has criticised aspects of the state government’s policies, calling for improved infrastructure, economic growth, and broader inclusion.

Observers view his growing grassroots engagements across key areas such as Bende, Obingwa, and the Ngwa axis as part of early positioning ahead of the 2027 elections.

Meanwhile, Governor Otti has defended his administration’s performance, highlighting ongoing reforms and development projects aimed at revitalising the state’s economy and infrastructure.

With endorsements building and political alignments taking shape, Kalu’s anticipated declaration is expected to significantly influence the political landscape in Abia as preparations for the next election cycle intensify.
