Iyabo Obasanjo, an Ogun State governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has dismissed claims that her candidacy is merely a strategy to negotiate for a deputy governorship or ministerial position.

Speaking on Saturday in Abeokuta during the “Media Parliament” programme organised by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Obasanjo described such reports as false and misleading, insisting she is firmly in the race to succeed Dapo Abiodun in 2027.

She emphasised that her campaign is driven by public support rather than financial strength, noting that she has not spent heavily and instead relies on the goodwill of the people.

Highlighting grassroots backing, she said supporters have contributed in various ways, including donating time, materials, and campaign items—an outcome she attributed to her previous service as a commissioner and senator.

Obasanjo also firmly ruled out any interest in accepting a secondary political role, stating that she is not contesting for deputy governor or seeking a ministerial appointment.

She further pointed out that politics is not her only means of livelihood, revealing that she maintains a career in teaching and would return to it if unsuccessful in the election.

Her comments followed a recent meeting with Bola Tinubu, which she described as private but productive, noting that their discussion was engaging and constructive.

Reaffirming her position, Obasanjo said her governorship ambition is rooted in a people-oriented approach built on trust and widespread goodwill rather than financial influence.
