Former Lagos State governorship aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Funso Doherty, has declared his intention to contest the 2027 Lagos governorship election under the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

He made the announcement on Friday at the Freedom Park Old Prison Ground, where party members and supporters gathered for the unveiling.

Doherty said his decision to run was driven by concerns that the system that once nurtured Lagos State was deteriorating and required urgent reform. He emphasised the need for leadership built on integrity, competence, vision, and a people-focused approach.

According to him, although Lagos is blessed with hardworking residents, many are still unable to enjoy a decent standard of living. He argued that the state’s resources are not being equitably translated into development for the majority.

He criticised the current state of governance, saying that visible infrastructure in affluent areas often masks widespread challenges in education, healthcare, housing, and other essential services, despite the scale of annual public spending.

Doherty also pointed to long-standing issues such as housing shortages, failing schools, youth unemployment, and poor urban infrastructure, insisting that these problems have persisted for decades without adequate solutions.

He further expressed concern over the exploitation of young people for political gain, as well as the daily struggles citizens face, including flooding, traffic congestion, and insecurity.

Outlining his vision, Doherty called for urgent investment in education, including stronger early and basic education systems and expanded technical and vocational training to improve job opportunities for young people.

He also advocated for improved healthcare delivery, affordable mass transit systems across road, rail, and waterways, and stronger accountability in governance.

Doherty stressed that his campaign is not personal ambition but a movement aimed at restoring dignity, opportunity, and effective governance for Lagos residents, adding that his candidacy represents the hopes of ordinary citizens.
