FIDA LAGOS HOLDS FREE LEGAL CLINIC, URGES ACTION AGAINST GBV, DRUG ABUSE

The International Federation of Women Lawyers, Lagos Branch, has called for increased awareness and engagement of vulnerable groups as a critical step toward tackling rising cases of drug abuse and gender-based violence in society.
The call was made during a free legal clinic and community outreach held at the palace of the Ojora of Ijora Kingdom in Lagos, where women from Orile, Iganmu, Badiya, Amukoko, Mosafejo, Apapa-Ajegunle, and Ijora Eleja participated.
Speaking at the event, the Chairperson of FIDA Lagos, Abimbola Jack-Oladugba, said the outreach was aimed at empowering women with knowledge of their legal rights and equipping them to better navigate social and family challenges.
According to her, the initiative focused on issues such as domestic violence, child custody, inheritance, and other forms of abuse against women and children.
“We are here to sensitise them on how to be better individuals and parents, and also educate them on measures to address domestic and gender-based violence,” she said.
Jack-Oladugba added that the free legal clinic provided an opportunity for women with unresolved legal issues to seek guidance and intervention, particularly in cases involving marriage disputes, child maintenance, and abandonment.

She noted that the organisation had previously intervened in several cases within the community, with positive feedback from beneficiaries.
The Ojora of Ijora Kingdom, Oba Fatai Aromire, commended the initiative and pledged continued support for programmes aimed at improving the welfare of women and addressing societal challenges.
The outreach also emphasised the importance of healthcare, with participants encouraged to prioritise regular medical check-ups.

As part of the programme, food items were distributed to about 300 women in the Ijora community and surrounding areas, reinforcing efforts to support vulnerable groups and promote overall well-being.
