OAU FINAL-YEAR MEDICAL STUDENT COLLAPSES, DIES BEFORE EXAMINATION

A 400-level medical student of the Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Osun State, Adewole Emmanuel, has died after collapsing shortly before his oral examination.
The incident, which occurred on Wednesday, has thrown the university community into mourning. According to reports, the student, a Part IV member of the College of Health Sciences, slumped moments before the commencement of his clinical viva session.
In a statement, the institution confirmed that the student complained of chest pain before collapsing. He was immediately attended to by lecturers and fellow students, but efforts to revive him proved unsuccessful.
The university’s spokesperson, Abiodun Olarewaju, described the development as tragic, noting that the management has begun engaging relevant stakeholders, including the deceased’s family, to ascertain the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
“This tragic loss has sent shockwaves through the university community,” the statement read, adding that the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Adebayo Bamire, extended condolences to the bereaved family and the entire student body.
The Great Ife Students’ Union also expressed grief over the incident, describing it as a devastating loss and highlighting the intense physical, emotional, and psychological demands faced by medical students.
Similarly, the Ife University Medical Students’ Association (IFUMSA) paid tribute to the deceased, describing him as a promising young doctor whose death has left a deep void within the academic community.
The incident comes barely four months after another medical student of the institution reportedly died in his sleep, raising fresh concerns about student welfare and the pressures associated with medical training.
Meanwhile, speculation surrounding the circumstances of the death has surfaced on social media, including claims about inadequate emergency response facilities. However, the university has urged the public to refrain from speculation, stating that efforts are ongoing to establish the facts.
The management reiterated its commitment to supporting the family and ensuring a thorough review of the incident, as students and colleagues continue to mourn the loss of a promising future in the medical field.
