OYO CONFIRMS FIVE LASSA FEVER CASES, RECORDS ONE DEATH

The Oyo State Government has confirmed five cases of Lassa fever, with one fatality, as it moves to contain the outbreak through coordinated emergency response measures.
The Commissioner for Health, Oluwaserimi Ajetunmobi, disclosed this during a press briefing in Ibadan on Friday, assuring residents that the situation is under control.
She stated that confirmed cases are currently being managed at designated facilities, including the Infectious Disease Centre Olodo and the University College Hospital isolation unit.
According to her, the state has activated its emergency response framework in line with guidelines from the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organisation.
“The State Government wishes to confirm five cases of Lassa fever outbreak, with one death,” Ajetunmobi said, adding that a multi-sectoral response team has been set up, cutting across health, environment, agriculture and information sectors.
She noted that the Incident Management System and Emergency Operations Centre have been activated, while surveillance efforts have been intensified, including active case searches and monitoring of over 200 identified contacts.
The commissioner further disclosed that isolation centres have been operationalised and essential drugs, including Ribavirin, have been prepositioned for treatment.
She added that infection prevention and control measures have been strengthened through the provision of personal protective equipment and enforcement of safe burial protocols.
Environmental interventions, including sanitation, fumigation and decontamination of affected areas, are ongoing, while healthcare workers continue to receive training.
Residents have been urged to adopt preventive measures such as proper food storage, maintaining clean environments, avoiding contact with rodents and seeking immediate medical attention when symptoms like fever, vomiting or bleeding occur.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Environment and Natural Resources, Ademola Aderinto, said environmental health officers have been deployed to sensitise residents and enforce compliance with safety standards.
Similarly, the Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, called on residents to adhere strictly to public health advisories.
A representative of the Chief Medical Director of the University College Hospital, Jesse Otegbeye, commended the state government’s swift and comprehensive response to the outbreak.
