Fewer than 80 cows reportedly died in Chafajaule village, Ribadu District of Fufore Local Government Area in Adamawa State after grazing on suspected poisonous grass.

Dr. Bartholomew Nyalas, the state’s Director of Veterinary Services, confirmed the incident to journalists on Monday.

He suggested the deaths may have been caused by cyanide poisoning, noting that such cases can occur when cattle feed on wild sorghum.

He explained that wild sorghum typically sprouts after the first rainfall in the area.

He added that when animals consume the plant in large quantities, it can be fatal.

“Most of the cows were disposed of at the scene of the incident in Chafajaule, Ribadu, within Fufore Local Government Area, while we also visited the Jimeta abattoir in the same division,” he said.
