English football is on the verge of a historic achievement this May, with Premier League clubs reaching the finals of all three major UEFA competitions for the first time ever.

Arsenal set the tone on Tuesday after securing a 2–1 aggregate victory over Atletico Madrid to qualify for the UEFA Champions League final.

By Thursday evening, the sweep was complete.

Aston Villa came from behind after the first leg to defeat Nottingham Forest 4–1 on aggregate, earning a place in the UEFA Europa League final against SC Freiburg in Istanbul on May 20.

At the same time, Crystal Palace sealed a 5–2 aggregate triumph over Shakhtar Donetsk to advance to the UEFA Europa Conference League final, where they will face Rayo Vallecano on May 27.

The Europa Conference League, introduced in 2021, is UEFA’s third-tier club competition beneath the Champions League and Europa League.

A Historic Milestone for England

This is the first time clubs from England have reached the finals of all three current UEFA competitions in the same season, underlining the depth and competitiveness of the Premier League.

Although English clubs have produced all-English finals before — notably in 2019 and 2021 — they had never managed a complete presence across the Champions League, Europa League and Conference League simultaneously.

The Conference League was introduced in 2021 after UEFA expanded European competitions into a three-tier system following the abolition of the Cup Winners’ Cup in 1999.

Near Misses and European History

English football has previously come close to such dominance.

Last season, Chelsea lifted the Conference League trophy while Tottenham Hotspur won the Europa League. However, Arsenal’s Champions League campaign ended in the semi-finals after defeat to Paris Saint-Germain.

English clubs also enjoyed European success in 1984, when Liverpool and Tottenham claimed continental titles, although that was before UEFA adopted its current three-competition format.

Other leagues have also threatened a clean sweep. Italian clubs reached all three finals in 2023 through Inter Milan, AS Roma and Fiorentina, but all three teams lost their respective finals.

Key European Finals

  • UEFA Europa League: Aston Villa vs SC Freiburg — May 20 in Istanbul
  • UEFA Europa Conference League: Crystal Palace vs Rayo Vallecano — May 27 in Leipzig
  • UEFA Champions League: Arsenal vs Paris Saint-Germain — May 30 in Budapest

What stands out most is the variety of English clubs involved. Beyond Arsenal’s return to Europe’s elite stage, Aston Villa’s revival under Unai Emery and Crystal Palace’s impressive Conference League campaign highlight the growing strength across the Premier League.

Attention now turns to the finals later this month, where English clubs will look to transform a historic collective achievement into European silverware.
