The Abia State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) on Thursday inaugurated its 618-member 2027 Presidential Campaign Council in Umuahia, while the state chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) declared its support for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid.

Speaking at the inauguration, the Deputy Speaker of the House of Representatives, Benjamin Kalu, said President Tinubu had entrusted them with the responsibility of working towards his vision of building a greater Nigeria.

Kalu described the assignment as a call to public service and a defining moment for the country, expressing confidence that Tinubu would secure victory in the 2027 presidential election.

He noted that the South-East remained politically strategic, urging stakeholders in the region to unite and make decisions that would strengthen their political relevance.

According to him, the region must embrace unity and work across political and regional divides to avoid decisions that could undermine its future.

Kalu also described Tinubu’s administration as an opportunity for the South-East to strengthen its political position and called for the President to be allowed to complete his eight-year tenure to consolidate the reforms he had initiated.

He further urged members of the campaign council to remain united, focused and committed to their responsibilities.

Meanwhile, the PDP deputy governorship candidate in Abia State, Abraham Amah, announced the party’s support for Tinubu’s re-election, describing the President’s performance as commendable.

Amah said the proposed political partnership between the PDP and APC would create opportunities for greater development in the state and improve its access to federal appointments and other benefits.

He added that cooperation between both political parties would make it easier for Abia State to secure important positions and strengthen its relationship with the Federal Government.

In his remarks, the Coordinator of the Campaign Council and APC State Chairman, Chijioke Chukwu, described the inauguration as a new beginning for the party, noting that its members had put aside their previous disagreements to pursue a common political goal.

Chukwu commended Kalu for his efforts in coordinating the party in the state and thanked Tinubu for the opportunity given to him to serve.

He acknowledged the challenges ahead but expressed confidence in the party’s ability to deliver victory for the President in 2027, adding that such an achievement would strengthen Abia State’s political bargaining power.

The APC chairman also appealed to Kalu to use his relationship with the President to facilitate the filling of the vacant ministerial position previously occupied by Nkeiruka Onyejeocha, following her resignation from the Federal Executive Council.

He urged the President to appoint a credible APC member from the state to the position, describing the situation surrounding Abia’s representation at the Federal Character Commission as embarrassing to the party.
