Akure – Mohammed Bashir, a suspected member of the dreaded Boko Haram sect, has been arrested by men of the Ondo State police command.
Bashir, whose father reportedly hails from Niger Republic and mother from Borno State, was nabbed on Sunday while loitering on Isua/Ifira-Akoko Road in Akoko South-East Local Government Area of the state.
Some items suspected to be charms were said to have been found on the suspect after his arrest by men of the police anti-crime patrol in the area.
Femi Joseph, Public Relations Officer of the command, said Bashir was still in the protective custody of the command for further enquiry.
“The suspect was arrested by men of the anti-crime patrol of the command in Isua-Akoko. He was found loitering on Isua/Ifira Akoko Road.
“When interrogated, he confessed that he was a member of the Boko Haram sect. He said his father is from Niger Republic while his mother is from Maiduguri in Borno State.
“He said when Maiduguri was hot for him, he ran to Nassarawa last month. He said he left Nassarawa yesterday (Saturday) and came down to the South-West to hide here.
“He also confessed that one Daffo is his team leader while Shekau is still the overall leader of the group. When he was arrested, some items suspected to be charms were found on him. He is still in the protective custody of the command for further enquiry,” Joseph said.
The arrest of Bashir came barely a week after the military authorities announced the capture of a top Boko Haram commander, Idris Ibrahim Babawo, by the Ondo state police command.
Sani Kukasheka, Director of Army Public Relations, who made the announcement in a statement in Maiduguri, said the 42-year-old Babawo was captured while trying to evade arrest.
Babawo, who is a native of Chinade village in Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State, was identified as one of those in the Boko Haram wanted list.
