#ENDSARS, ONE OF MOST SUCCESSFUL MOVEMENTS – SOYINKA
By Adeniyi Onaara
Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate, stated that the #EndSARS protest was one of Nigeria’s most effective movements.
Soyinka, speaking during an interactive session at the presentation of his book, ‘The Putin Files: Excursions Around The Ideology Of Pain,’ in Lagos over the weekend, said the #EndSARS demonstration was an expression of people’s discontent with the country’s plight.
It will be remembered that in October 2020, protestors using the hashtag #EndSARS came to the streets across the country to demand an end to police brutality.
The Nigeria Police Force’s special anti-robbery squad was disbanded as a result of the protests.
Soyinka narrated how he addressed some of the demonstrators in one of the protests staged in Lagos.
“#EndSARS is one of the most successful movements,” he stated. It is genuine. It was people’s expression. It was well-organized. Most importantly, it was founded on fact.”I came down and addressed the audience when I saw them. It made me think of the anti-Abacha campaign. When I’d stand in the middle of the street and address the audience.”
He claimed that certain people plotted to “tilt” the country toward an interim administration even before the 2023 elections, and that those who backed the interim government conspiracy were duped.
“Some people had schemed to tilt the country toward having an interim government,” the Nobel winner remarked. This tendency was evident even before the election.
Soyinka, who also alluded to the Peter Obi movement in comparison to the #EndSARS movement, said the fulcrum of the supporters of the former was based on “half-truth.”
“So some of those who thought they were being radical were being’mumu’ and playing the script of others,” he explained. They thought they were tough, daring, and unique. You simply do not say who shouts the loudest.
There is no problem if you wish to speak the truth. “I’ll reverse, but you want to call people out based on the unprovable, even though some people will respond with their strict monologue.”I will not support it or remain silent. Impossible. Especially since I know more about these topics than many individuals, even if they don’t admit it.
“They can go back to the internet, open their dictionary of abuses and start all over again. I will come back and tell them that you are ‘mumu’. You were not playing your script,’’ he said.
