2023 FIFA WWC: NIGERIA, CANADA SHARE POINTS IN GROUP OPENING MATCH
Nigeria’s Super Falcons held Canada to a 0-0 draw in their Group B opener at the 2023 FIFA women’s World Cup co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand.
The result means after three meetings, the Super Falcons are still unbeaten against Canada at the women’s World Cup (one win and two draws).
Goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie, was the hero after stopping a penalty in the 50th minute to give the Super Falcons of Nigeria a point.
Nigeria’s best chance in the first half came from Ifeoma Onumonu whose strike just outside the box forced the Canadian goalkeeper into a save.
Oshoala also got her chance but couldn’t capitalise on an error by the Canadian goalkeeper.
Francisca Ordega fouled Christine Sinclair in the box two minutes into the second half, giving the Canadians a chance. However, Nnadozie had different ideas as she moved in the appropriate way to thwart Sinclair’s endeavour.
Deborah Abidoun of Nigeria, who made an impression in her senior World Cup debut, ended her shift on a depressing note after receiving a straight red card for a risky tackle on Ashley Lawrence of Canada.
On July 27, Randy Waldrum’s team will play the co-hosts, Australia.
