SEXTORTION: NPF CALLS FOR DISCRETION ON DATING APPS
Nigerians who use dating apps have been reminded by the Nigeria Police Force to exercise caution when meeting people online and to safeguard their privacy.
This was stated in a press release that was signed by Mr. Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the spokesman for the Nigerian Police Force.
Nigerians, who frequently build connections and relationships through online platforms in the digital era, should be aware of the risks, according to the police spokesman.
He cautioned consumers to use caution and judgement when engaging in virtual exchanges.
According to the police, a recent case of sextortion, cyberbullying, character assassination, and blackmail serves as a clear reminder of the need for prudence when navigating the world of online dating.
In the case at hand, the complainant, like many others, used a dating app to look for companionship. He finally agreed to meet the young woman, who had insisted on going to his house after months of correspondence. They had consensual interactions as a result of their meeting. He had no idea that his confidence would be violated in such an aggressive way.
He met Opara Joan Chizaram, ‘f’ 26, who secretly videotaped him when they were having a private moment and took pictures of his surroundings at home. These covert actions were done with the intention of taking advantage of and manipulating the complainant’s confidence.
This person then requested a large amount of money from the plaintiff. When the request was not granted, she resorted to shocking and repugnant behaviour, threatening to reveal sensitive and private information about the complainant, including sexual photos and videos, in an effort to extort money from him.
Investigators moved quickly to act upon the complainant’s brave decision to report this horrible act to the NPF-National Cybercrime Centre (NCCC), which resulted in the arrest of the culprit. It was found during the investigation that this was not an isolated incident. A troubling pattern of behavior emerged from the suspect’s comparable interactions with other people she met through the dating app.
The Nigeria Police Force vehemently denounces these instances of sextortion, cyberbullying, character assassination, and blackmail. We want to emphasize how crucial it is to use caution and care when using online platforms, especially when sensitive information is at stake.
We provide the following recommendations to help you defend against potential threats:
Protect your personal information, such as your home address, bank information, and intimate material, by maintaining your privacy. Never divulge important information to anyone you meet online until you are confident in their reliability.
Always seek and respect express consent in all conversations, whether online or off, especially when it comes to private concerns.
Trust Your Gut: If someone’s behavior raises questions or strikes you as suspicious, follow your gut and exercise caution. Setting your safety and wellbeing as a top priority is really vital.
Report suspicious activity: Do not hesitate to contact the proper authorities if you come across any instances of cyberbullying, sextortion, or blackmail. You might be able to stop such crimes from happening in the future.
Education and Awareness: Keep up with online security issues and familiarise yourself with potential dangers. Your best line of defence against cybercrime is awareness.
All people’s safety and dignity continue to be protected by the Nigeria Police Force. We’ll keep looking into these despicable acts and prosecuting those who do them to the fullest extent of the law.
