Frenkie de Jong, a long-term target for Manchester United, has declined to rule out a move to the Premier League in the future.

After being named by Erik ten Hag as a top transfer target, the 26-year-old playmaker for Barcelona was strongly linked to United during the previous summer, De Jong was not interested in pursuing a move despite United and the Spanish powerhouses having agreed to a deal worth £70 million with add-ons.

After a span of eighteen months, De Jong remains at Barcelona and is content with his life under Xavi Hernandez.

However, his most recent remarks might rekindle the transfer saga that dominated the Old Trafford story for most of the previous summer.

De Jong stated, “I am at the club where I always wanted to be, where I dreamed of [Barcelona],” in an interview with the Dutch publication, NOS. In response to the question of whether playing in a new league was appealing, he said, “Possibly. But I’m very satisfied at Barca. It’s always difficult to say. For now, I feel good here!”

Although De Jong appears to have left the door open for a potential move to Old Trafford, it was revealed back in October that the Netherlands international was “very upset” with the way the Barcelona management handled the drama from the previous summer.

According to Sport, the midfield maestro was far from impressed with Barcelona’s attempts to offload him after making it clear he wanted to stay.

The report continued by outlining the negative effects the situation had on De Jong’s standing with the Nou Camp leadership. Time, however, has made it possible to mend the player-board relationship.

Ten Hag, who coached De Jong for eighteen months at Ajax, has never concealed his admiration for the player. Speaking back in February ahead of Manchester United’s meeting with Barcelona in the Europa League, he said: “In 2019, there was a lot of fascination with that Ajax team. Frenkie brought a lot of that fascination and he has developed over the following years in Spain.

“He’s a fantastic player and has become even better. Playing out from the back, he always has time. It was a pleasure working with him. He would strengthen any squad in the world. He’s got unique quality.”
