KWARA TO STOP ILLEGAL BUILDINGS CLOSE TO DAM
The Kwara State Government is taking action to remove any illegal structures that endanger property and human lives in the vicinity of Asa-Dam.
Usman Lade, the Commissioner for Water Resources, dropped this hint in Ilorin while on an impromptu inspection tour to the Asa-Dam Area.
The Asa-Dam River, Marina Estate, and its surroundings are in close proximity to the Commissioner’s specific warning to cease any illegal construction, according to a statement issued to the press on Sunday by the ministry’s Assistant Press Secretary, Adewoye Oluwatosin.
According to Lade, there is a significant risk to people’s lives when constructing homes or any other type of development too close to the Asa River and Dam.
Christiana Asonibare, the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, issued a warning as well, saying that the state government will not treat this matter lightly given that it now seriously endangers human life.
Also addressing during the tour, the Director of Engineering Water Resources services, Engr. Yusuf Wopa noted that a standard distance measure between the river and any form of building construction must be provided along Asa-Dam, even if the land is purchased legitimately.
However, Deputy Surveyor General of Geographic Information Services, Mr. Afolayan Timothy, made a contribution in which he stated that an inquiry would be conducted to see whether the buildings that were purportedly built without permission on government land were approved.
He said that the appropriate steps to evict them from the land will be done as soon as it is established that those lands were not sanctioned by the government-authorized personnel.
