ILLEGAL TRADING STRUCTURES: CBD, LASBCA, OTHERS TO CURB MENACE ON LAGOS ISLAND
The Lagos State Government, through the Office of Central Business District, Lagos State Building Control Agency, and Ministry of Physical Planning, has issued a 14-day ultimatum to Lagos Island traders who are compromising the safety of Lagosians by constructing extensions and hanging generators dangerously on structures that are not approved.
Speaking on Monday during a joint inspection tour of the area, the Special Adviser to the State Governor on CBD, Hon. (Mrs.) Bola Olumegbon-Lawal, reiterated that the State Government is committed to making Lagos environment conducive and business-friendly
According to her, there is an urgent need to address illegal trading activities in the city. She emphasized that the mission to rid the streets of illegal traders is not solely about enforcing regulations but also about prioritizing the safety and well-being of citizens.
Hon. Olumegbon-Lawal noted that illegal trading has been identified as a threat to public safety, hindering emergency response efforts and diminishing Lagos’s reputation as a hub of commerce and innovation.
Earlier, the General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency (LSBCA), Mr. Gbolahan Oki, said the traders have 14 days to remove all illegal structures from the streets, adding that the exercise should not be politicized by anyone.
Also speaking, the Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, noted that the action of the traders has completely compromised safety, stressing that it must be checked before it gets out of hand.
