TINUBU CONFERS GCON ON AWUJALE AS HE CLOCKS 90
In recognition of the monarch’s 90th birthday, President Bola Ahmed Tinubu bestowed the Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON), the second-highest national title, on Oba Sikiru Adetona, the Awujale of Ijebuland, on Friday.
At the Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona School of Governance Studies’ inauguration and book presentation, “Reinventing Governance in Nigeria: The Oba (Dr.) Sikiru Kayode Adetona Model,” Tinubu made the announcement at Olabisi Onabanjo University, Ago-Iwoye.
The President, accompanied by Vice President Kashim Shettima, stated that the monarch is deserving of the second highest title in the realm due to his honourable service to humanity and his role in nation-building.
“Because Kabiyesi Adetona has honoured our country and humanity with his many years of meritorious service, I, therefore, on this occasion of his 90th birthday ceremony confer on him the second highest National honour of Grand Commander of the Order of Niger (GCON).
“The National Institute of Policy and Strategic Studies, Kuru, Jos, will be asked to take over the running and management of Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies,” the President said.
According to Tinubu, Oba Adetona made numerous contributions to the growth of the country, especially in the area of education, which has been expanded to provide optimal results through a variety of endowments and grants.
He praised Adetona for his contribution in guaranteeing the return of democratic administration to Nigeria, describing him as frank and of extraordinary character who stood his ground and challenged injustice in all its manifestations.
Oba Sikiru Adetona School of Governance Studies, according to President Tinubu, would be taken over and run by the National Institute for Policy and Strategic Studies (NIPSS), Kuru, Jos.
Oba Adetona’s reign has been a huge success and a source of pride for the entire Ijebuland and the state, according to Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun, who made this statement in his speech.
He asserts that the monarch symbolises the elegance and sincerity of the Ijebu people’s ancestral heritage, highlighting how his enthusiasm for politics and approachable dedication to learning led to the establishment of the Oba Sikiru Adetona Professorial Chair in Governance at Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU), Ago-Iwoye.
