COPA AMERICA: JAMES RODRIGUEZ EQUALS PELE’S RECORD AFTER COLOMBIA EDGE URUGUAY
James Rodriguez equaled late Pele’s record after helping Colombia beat Uruguay 1-0 and reach the 2024 Copa America final in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Rodriguez provided the assist for Colombia’s goal scored by Jefferson Lerma in the 39th minute.
With the assist Rodriguez became the first South American player to record six assists in a major tournament since Pelé did it for Brazil at the 1970 World Cup.
Colombia advanced to their third final in history and it is their first Copa America final since 2001.
However, Colombia had to play most part of the game with 10 men after Daniel Muñoz received a red card just before halftime.
Post-match, emotions boiled over as players from both sides clashed on the pitch.
The brawl went even further with some Uruguay players, including Liverpool striker Darwin Nuñez, venturing into the stands to confront fans.
Colombia will now face Copa America champions Argentina at Hard Rock Stadium in Miami on Sunday.
