APC PRIMARIES: NANS SEEKS GREATER CONSIDERATION FOR FORMER STUDENT LEADERS

The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has urged the All Progressives Congress (APC) to give priority consideration to former student leaders in its upcoming primaries, saying such inclusion would enhance youth representation and expand the party’s support base.

The appeal was made during the presentation of a House of Representatives nomination form to NANS’ immediate past president, Lucky Emonefe, who is contesting to represent the Ethiope Federal Constituency of Delta State.

Speaking at the event on Wednesday, NANS President Olusola Ladoja said the decision to sponsor Emonefe’s nomination form was based on his record of leadership and service during his tenure.

“We took the decision to purchase the nomination form for Comrade Lucky Emonefe in recognition of his outstanding service and dedication to the student body during his tenure,” Ladoja said.

He argued that former student leaders have the experience, organisational capacity, and grassroots connection required for elective positions, and therefore deserve consideration within the ruling party.

“We urge the APC to give due consideration to former student leaders aspiring for elective positions, particularly Comrade Emonefe,” he added.

Ladoja further noted that Emonefe’s role in supporting the Nigerian Education Loan Fund initiative and his alignment with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Tinubu position him as a strong candidate.

He said the APC could gain wider electoral support by opening its platform to young leaders with proven leadership backgrounds.

“The ruling party will attract massive support from students across the country if individuals with strong backgrounds in student leadership are given the opportunity to serve,” he said.

In his response, Emonefe described the gesture as both surprising and encouraging, adding that it reflects the confidence Nigerian students have in him.

“This gesture is both surprising and encouraging. It reflects the trust and belief reposed in me by Nigerian students,” he said.

He pledged to focus on youth development, education, and economic empowerment if elected, while promising transparency and accountable representation.

The event was attended by student leaders and stakeholders who commended NANS for promoting greater youth participation in politics.
