American actor, producer and director Denzel Washington has revealed that he will be starring in the third installment of Marvel Studio’s superhero film, Black Panther.

Washington made this known in a chat with Australia Today during the press tour for the upcoming epic historical-action movie Gladiator 2. He also hinted on his plans to retire from acting.

“I played Othello at 22. I am about to play Othello again at 70. After that, I am playing Hannibal. After that, I’ll be speaking to Steve McQueen about a film. After that, Ryan Coogler is writing a part for me in the next Black Panther. After that, I’m going to do King Lear. After that, I’ll retire.”

The Ryan Coogler directed movie which was released in February 2018 was the first superhero film with a predominantly black cast. The movie which achieved a number of feats has grossed over one billion dollars at the Box Office as at 2023 being the first superhero movie to be nominated in the Oscar Awards for Best Production Design category.

Recall that the lead star in the movie Chadwick Boseman during the 2019 American Film Institute (AFI) Lifetime Achievement Awards noted that there is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.

He said: “My whole cast stands on your shoulders. The daily battles won, the thousand territories gained. The many sacrifices you made for the culture on film sets through your career. The things you refused to compromise along the way lay the blueprints for all to follow. There is no Black Panther without Denzel Washington.”

Boseman died in August 2020 after a four-year battle with colon cancer. The nature of his illness came to the fore after his death.
