WORLD NEWS: 17 DEAD AS BUS CRASH IN BRAZIL
According to regional authorities, a bus on a secluded mountain route in the northeastern state of Alagoas, Brazil, plunged into a ravine on Sunday, killing seventeen people.
According to a statement from the state administration, police were trying to identify the victims and remove bodies from the bus wreckage that plunged into a chasm that was more than 20 meters (65 feet) deep.
According to the report, “several” people were hurt.
Using the social media site X, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva declared that his administration “will give all necessary support to state authorities in the assistance, care, and support of the victims.”
He expressed condolences to the families of those involved in the accident.
Alagoas state governor Paulo Dantas declared on X three days of mourning over the “tragedy.”
When the driver lost control, presumably due to a mechanical malfunction, the bus was reportedly transporting about 40 passengers up a mountain road to a historical site close to the village of Uniao dos Palmares.
Near a location in the Serra da Barriga mountain range that holds historical significance for Brazilians, the bus veered off the road in a difficult-to-reach spot.
It was part of the Quilombo dos Palmares, an isolated hamlet founded by runaway slaves in the 17th century that was eventually destroyed by Brazil’s Portuguese colonial overlords.
November is the month Brazil celebrates “Black Awareness,” with a public holiday on November 20 — the anniversary of the death of Zumbi, the most prominent leader of the Quilombo dos Palmares.
Brazil’s racial equality minister, Anielle Franco, said on X she was “hit hard” by news of the accident, adding “this tragedy saddens us even more deeply” given the Black Awareness events held in the region.
