OTTI APPROVES RECONSTRUCTION OF ABIA BRIDGE
The long-abandoned Omenuko Bridge at Ozuabam in the state’s Arochukwu Local Government Area was cleared for renovation on Monday by Abia State Governor Alex Otti.
The bridge connects the senatorial zones of Abia North and Abia Central.
Due to its limited design, which only permits one car to pass at a time, the deteriorated bridge has been a serious safety hazard to commuters for decades.
The situation deteriorates during rainy seasons since the bridge, which is perilously located at the foot of a hill and a hairpin bend, is frequently submerged by floodwaters.
Tragically, the bridge has claimed multiple lives, including students travelling for JAMB examinations.
The state Commissioner for Information, Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing the press at the Government House, Umuahia, on the outcome of this week’s State Executive Council meeting presided over by Otti, stating, “For decades, a lot of politicians have taken undue advantage of the rickety nature of that bridge to make promises to people around that area till date, they have never
“His Excellency, Dr Alex Otti, has ordered that the bridge be reconstructed to serve the people from that area.”
He added that fixing the bridge will greatly benefit the populace and that the project’s flag off would be announced shortly.
The commissioner also revealed that the state administration has forwarded the Abia State Electricity Bill to the state House of Assembly for review in an effort to achieve autonomous electric power.
He emphasized the significance of the electrical bill and the necessity of all interested parties attending the public hearing on the executive bill, which the Assembly would hold on December 18, 2024.
“All the critical stakeholders are expected to be there and make inputs on how to make the process of enacting that bill, and come up with a robust idea that will address issues of electricity in our state”, Kanu stated.
Speaking on the advantages of the power Bill, Mr. Ikechukwu, Commissioner for Power and Public Utilities, stated Monday that the law will serve as a catalyst to accomplish the governor’s objective of giving all Abians access to power.
