DISEASE OUTBREAK: LASRO INTRODUCES LAGOS RESILIENCE INTELLIGENCE SYSTEM

Read Time:2 Minute, 31 Second

The Lagos State Resilience Office (LASRO) hosted a one-day workshop at The Colossus in Ikeja, Lagos, to introduce the Lagos Resilience Intelligence System (LRIS). The aim was to validate information concerning early warning signs of potential disease outbreaks, assess the adequacy of proposed thresholds, and evaluate access to information critical for assessing risk indicators.

The LRIS is designed to deliver real-time data and insights that aid in decision-making, thereby strengthening the state’s resilience to health risks. The system will focus on tracking and analyzing key indicators related to disease outbreaks, such as infectious disease surveillance, environmental health, and healthcare infrastructure.

The workshop gathered stakeholders from a range of sectors, including government agencies, private organizations, academia, and civil society groups. This provided participants with the opportunity to share their expertise, offer feedback, and validate the information and thresholds proposed for the LRIS.

In her welcome address, Dr. Folayinka Dania, the Lagos State Chief Resilience Officer, highlighted the importance of discussing disease outbreaks as a threat. She emphasized the need to reassess the current approach in order to develop an effective early warning system to mitigate their impact.

Represented by Tpl. Olufemi Dada, Assistant Director, Town Planning, she said, ā€œWe are gathered here to discuss Disease Outbreaks as a threat to our livelihoods in Lagos. Recall the State had demonstrated resilience to disease outbreaks, such as Ebola in 2014 when Lagos was able to contain the disease from spreading beyond controlā€.

Dr. Tolulope Osayomi, Senior Lecturer, Department of Geography, University of Ibadan, a facilitator at the programme, noted that the workshop is aimed at validating the ongoing process of ensuring resilient Lagos against external shocks and contemporary environmental challenges.

According to him, ā€œThe discussions have been very wonderful, especially from the perspective of policy actors. It has been very enriching. Inputs from the public sectors have enhanced the value of the conversation at the Forumā€.

Dr. Olajide Julius Faremi of the Centre for Housing and Sustainable Development and the Sub-Dean, Faculty of Environmental Sciences, University of Lagos, corroborated the position of Osayemi that the programme has been very productive.

He emphasised that it is the best way to validate the framework and as a follow-up on what has been put together after months and years of work.

Mrs. Olabisi Sonibare, Director, Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA), applauded the organisers, saying, ā€œThe workshop is a welcome development for Lagos State Government as a whole because it has brought all relevant stakeholders together to discuss data, the need to bring data together to be able to develop Lagos resilience furtherā€.

“It has also been an eye opener on how we can bring resilience and adaptation to issues around the environment such that when they happen we will not caught unawaresā€, she added.

On behalf of the participants, Mrs. Adedayo Adebayo expressed gratitude for LASRO’s efforts in strengthening Lagos’ resilience. She also praised Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his leadership and dedication to the Lagos State resilience initiative.
