EFCC GRILLS EX-AKWA IBOM GOV EMMANUEL FOR ALLEGED N700 BILLION FRAUD
Udom Emmanuel, a former governor of Akwa Ibom State, was arrested by members of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) on Tuesday after he accepted an invitation to respond to allegations of money laundering and diversion of funds brought against him by the Network against Corruption and Trafficking.
The petitioner claimed that Emmanuel received N3 trillion from the Federation Account over the course of eight years but left a debt profile of N500 billion and unpaid ongoing projects worth N300 billion.
He was also accused of being unable to account for N700 billion. The EFCC’s investigations are still ongoing, and Emmanuel is being interrogated by agents.
EFCC’s spokesperson, Dele Oyewale, could not be reached when contacted.
Emmanuel served as governor of Akwa Ibom State from 2015 to 2023 under the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
