YAHOO: 32 PEOPLE CONVICTED FOR INTERNET FRAUD IN IBADAN
The capital of Oyo State, Ibadan, has seen multiple courts find no fewer than 32 people guilty of online fraud.
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), Ibadan Zonal Directorate, brought separate one-count charges against the convicted individuals for impersonation and cyber-related offenses.
Judge Nkeonye Maha of the Federal High Court, Ibadan, and Justices Ladiran Akintola, O.S. Adeyemi, K.B. Olawoyin, and G.A. Sunmonu of the Oyo State High Court delivered their rulings on Wednesday, imposing varied jail sentences and community service on the scammers.
The offenders entered guilty pleas and received the appropriate sentences, according to Dele Oyewale, Head of Media and Publicity at the EFCC.
Some were sentenced to three months to two years in prison, while others were forced to conduct community service and faced fines ranging from N50,000 to N500,000.
The prisoners also turned over a number of items to the federal government, including money, cell phones, laptops, and cars that were connected to their fraudulent activities.
Ayobami, one of the prisoners, was also mandated to pay N2.5 million in reparations to his victim.
The EFCC reiterated its commitment to fighting internet fraud and financial crimes across the country, warning that more offenders would face prosecution.
