ACTOR UZOR ARUKWE RESPONDS TO CRITICISM OVER HIS ‘SIMP’ CHARACTER IN MOVIE
Uzor Arukwe, a Nollywood actor, has responded to criticism on his performance in Omoni Oboli’s recent film, “Love In Every Word.”
Arukwe has come under fire for supposedly depicting Igbo males as “simps.” Arukwe played Odogwu Obiora, a wealthy Igbo guy who lavishes extravagantly on his partner Chioma (played by Bambam).
Although many people, particularly women, have hailed the film as the ideal representation of how men ought to treat their spouses, several male viewers felt that it overstated men’s obligations to their partners.
An X user Himp2million wrote, “Anambra men are not simps. Your movie is liked only by ladies who have always had the illusion of an odogwu that’ll spend his last dime on them.”
Responding to the X user, Arukwe explained that taking care of one’s partner and spending money on them doesn’t make a simp but responsible man.
He wrote, “Taking care of your woman and spending money on her doesn’t make you a simp. It only makes you a responsible man.
“How else do you show love to your partner if you can’t take care of their needs from the abundance of your wealth?”
Uzor Arukwe will face criticism for reportedly superimposing his character in a film for the second time.
He was charged with faking his Igbo accent in Funke Akindele’s hit song “A Tribe Called Judah” in 2023.
