‘NO EXCUSE FOR MY BEHAVIOUR’, RUDIGER TENDERS APOLOGY AFTER THROWING OBJECT AT REFEREE
Real Madrid defender Antonio Rudiger is facing a significant sanction after being sent off in last night’s Copa del Rey defeat to FC Barcelona.
The German international, who started for Los Blancos, narrowly escaped conceding a penalty for a late challenge on Ferran Torres in the 90th minute — a decision that could easily have favored Barcelona.
Rudiger was substituted during extra time due to physical discomfort. However, after Real Madrid conceded a late goal from Jules Kounde, Rudiger, from the sidelines, appeared to lose his composure.
Moments before the final whistle, he became embroiled in a heated confrontation with the referee, prompting Real Madrid staff from the dugout to step in and restrain him.
In the midst of the altercation, Rudiger hurled an object toward the referee, leading to his dismissal and putting him at risk of a suspension ranging from four to twelve matches.
Following the incident, Rudiger took to social media to issue an apology, expressing remorse to both the referee and Real Madrid fans.
“There’s definitely no excuse for my behaviour last night. I’m very sorry for that,” Rudiger wrote on Instagram.
“We played a very good game from the 2nd half on – After 111 minutes I was not able to help my team anymore and before the final whistle I did a mistake,” he added.
“Sorry again to the referee and to everyone I have disappointed last night,” he concluded.
