At least 12 people have been confirmed dead and several others abducted following a coordinated reprisal attack by armed bandits on multiple villages in Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State.

The incident was revealed by Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency analyst focused on the Lake Chad region, via a post on his X (formerly Twitter) account on Tuesday.

According to Makama, intelligence sources reported that the assault occurred around 1:30 p.m. on May 5, 2025, in retaliation for a recent military operation by troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA, which had targeted a bandit hideout in the Dankurmi forest.

The armed assailants reportedly invaded seven villages in the Dankurmi district—Zamfarawa, Kurukuru, Dogon Daji, Dan Hayin Zamfarawa, Tungar Zabo, Burmukai, and Dambawa—killing 12 people and abducting an undetermined number of residents.

“Upon receipt of the distress report, troops were alerted and have been responding decisively, as efforts to rescue the abducted victims were intensified,” Makama added.
