WESTERHOF: NIGERIA MUST REACH WORLD CUP QUARTER-FINALS
Former Nigeria coach Clemens Westerhof has insisted that it would be a
failure on the part of the Super Eagles if they fail to reach the
quarter final stage of the 2018 FIFA World Cup finals holding in
Russia in the summer.
Westerhof, a Dutch coach, was a huge success when he took charge of
the Super Eagles from 1989–1994.
During that period, the Super Eagles finished runners-up to Cameroon
at the Algiers 1990 Nations Cup and won the continental showpiece in
Tunisia 1994.
He became the first coach to lead the Super Eagles to the FIFA World
Cup finals in 1994 in the United States of America, reaching the
second round where they lost 2-1 to the Azzuris of Italy under manager
Arrigo Sacchi.
Since that maiden appearance second round feat, the Super Eagles have
not gone beyond that stage despite four subsequent appearances in
1998, 2002, 2010 and 2014.
Speaking from his Netherlands home country on Wednesday to our
reporter, Westerhof said Nigeria has the talents to push her football
strength beyond the second round stage at World Cup.
“Super Eagles must do well at the World Cup. Not the group, no,
quarter final, good or semi final,” Westerhof began.
“You have the talent, players doing well in Europe. You must go to the
quarter final.
“If you don’t, no, too bad. Because the players are good”.
Reminded that seeing off Argentina in the group stage will determine
how far the Super Eagles can go in the tournament, Westerhof said the
Eagles must qualify from the group, Argentina or not.
“You put your tactics right, you go far, not Argentina”, he concluded
