LAGOS GOVERNMENT SHUTS ILLEGAL ABATTOIR OPERATING FROM RESIDENCE IN IJU

The Lagos State Government has arrested a resident of Iju Station in the Ifako-Ijaiye area for illegally converting his home into a slaughter facility, days after the closure of the Oko-Oba Abattoir in Agege.
Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, made the announcement Monday via his official X (formerly Twitter) handle, noting that the enforcement action was carried out following a report by a concerned citizen.
The operation, conducted by officials from the Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI) task force, led to the suspect’s arrest at No. 12 Alfred Williams Street, where he had turned a residential property into an abattoir, allegedly engaging in unhygienic meat processing practices.
A video shared by Wahab showed the suspect threatening neighbours in Yoruba while being taken away by enforcement officers, declaring, “…If I come back, you will accept GOD as your boss…”
Wahab said the illegal activity posed significant public health and environmental risks to the surrounding community. “The property owner had illegally converted his residence into an abattoir following the closure of Oko-Oba Abattoir, endangering the entire neighbourhood through unhygienic practices and profiting from this reckless operation,” he stated.
The premises have since been sealed, and the suspect is in custody.
The commissioner reiterated the state’s zero-tolerance stance on environmental violations and urged Lagos residents to continue reporting infractions.
“This swift response demonstrates our zero-tolerance policy towards all forms of environmental violations, whether in designated facilities or residential areas,” Wahab affirmed. “Together, we’ll protect our communities and maintain a #CleanerLagos.”
The action comes days after the Lagos government shut down the Oko-Oba Abattoir due to multiple environmental infractions and poor operational standards, following an inspection led by Wahab.
