OYO EMERGENCY AGENCY ISSUES FLASH FLOOD ALERT FOR IBADAN RESIDENTS
Agency Report
The Oyo State Emergency Management Agency (OYSEMA) has issued a flash flood alert for residents of Ibadan, particularly those in Akinyele, Egbeda, and Oluyole Local Government Areas, following weather forecasts predicting heavy rainfall within the next 24 hours.
This warning was announced on Friday in a statement released by the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, Dotun Oyelade, and signed by OYSEMA Administrative Secretary, Mrs. Ojuolape Busari.
According to the agency, the Flood Early Warning System forecast indicates that rainfall exceeding 100mm (approximately four inches) is expected in some parts of the affected LGAs, with the heaviest rainfall predicted northeast of the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture (IITA) and near the Ibadan Airport.
Busari emphasised the need for residents to take proactive measures to mitigate the potential impacts of flash flooding, including loss of life, displacement, and damage to property and infrastructure.
She identified the areas around IITA in Akinyele LGA, the airport in Egbeda LGA, and the Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria in Oluyole LGA as particularly vulnerable.

“The advice has become imperative to activate the concerned Local Government Authorities and communities to take necessary actions to mitigate the risk of flooding,” the statement read.
Busari warned that flash floods could quickly inundate streets and low-lying areas, potentially rendering roads impassable and creating hazardous driving conditions.
She urged residents to remain vigilant, avoid driving or walking through floodwaters, and be prepared to relocate to higher ground if instructed.
“Turn around, don’t drown. If you live in a flood-prone area, be prepared to move to higher ground if instructed,” she said.
The agency said it is working closely with the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources to monitor the situation and coordinate emergency response efforts.
