Members of Nigeria’s Super Falcons have paid a hospital visit to South African forward Gabriela Salgado, who sustained a serious leg injury during the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) semi-final clash between Nigeria and South Africa on Tuesday.

Salgado was stretchered off in the 88th minute of the tightly contested encounter in Morocco after suffering a mid-shaft fracture of her left leg. The injury occurred late in the match, which Nigeria won 2–1 courtesy of a last-minute winner from Gloria Alozie.

According to the South African Football Association, Salgado underwent successful surgery at the Mohamed VI University Hospital in Casablanca and is expected to be out of action for the rest of the year.

The incident left players from both sides visibly shaken, with medical staff attending to Salgado for several minutes on the pitch.

In a gesture of sportsmanship and solidarity, Super Falcons captain Rasheedat Ajibade led a delegation of teammates to visit Salgado at the hospital on Wednesday. The Nigerian team presented her with a signed jersey and a heartfelt note of support.

Part of the message read: “Our immediate thoughts are solely with her for comfort, care, and the recovery journey ahead. We are holding Gabriela, her teammates, her family and close friends in our hearts, sending our deepest wishes for strength and resilience.”

“The spirit of competition instantly fades in moments like these, replaced by a shared sense of care for a fellow athlete… The Super Falcons NGR stands firmly alongside Banyana Banyana in solidarity and support.”

The Super Falcons are set to face host nation Morocco in the WAFCON final on Saturday, where they will aim to clinch a record-extending 10th continental title.
