Criminals targeted Marnona village in the Wurno Local Government Area of Sokoto State during the early morning hours of Sunday, resulting in the death of one congregant and the abduction of several others while they were engaged in morning prayers.

The assailants, reportedly equipped with advanced weaponry, invaded the mosque at dawn and opened fire indiscriminately on attendees, causing widespread panic within the community.

Inhabitants fled in terror as gunfire reverberated throughout the village.

In a statement confirming the occurrence, the Sokoto State Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, Isah Achida, denounced the attack as “barbaric” and “an act of cowardice. ”

Aiming at innocent worshippers in a hallowed location constitutes a blatant assault on our humanity and our beliefs.

“The offenders must face justice, and our community must stay united to overcome this threat,” Achida remarked.

Achida reassured residents that the state government, in partnership with law enforcement agencies, is actively engaged in combating banditry throughout Sokoto, while extending condolences to the mourning families and hoping for the prompt recovery of the injured.

Intelligence sources suspect that the perpetrators may have originated from covert camps nestled within the forests adjacent to the Sokoto and Zamfara states, infamous for concealing militant factions.

The assailants escaped prior to the arrival of security personnel at the location.

This event contributes to a series of aggressive assaults in Sokoto East, where communities have consistently endured invasions, abductions, and homicides in recent months.

Residents have been advocating for an enhanced military presence and coordinated initiatives to reestablish order.

Police spokesperson, DSP Ahmed Rufai, stated that the command has initiated an inquiry and will release a comprehensive statement shortly.

In the meantime, anxiety persists in Marnona and neighboring villages as security patrols escalate and local vigilante groups collaborate with law enforcement to protect against additional assaults.

Currently, villagers find themselves tallying their losses, their prayers interrupted by the looming threat of insecurity that envelops Sokoto’s rural areas.
