NEWLY SWORN-IN LAGOS COUNCILLOR DIES TWO WEEKS AFTER TAKING OATH OF OFFICE

Just two weeks following her inauguration as Councillor for Ward C1 in the Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area of Lagos State, Oluwakemi Rufai has passed away.

Rufai, the sole female councillor in the legislative assembly, is reported to have passed away in the early hours of Wednesday, August 13, 2025, following a brief illness.

Chairman of Ibeju-Lekki Local Government Area, Sesan Olowa, alongside Chairman of Lekki Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Rasaki Kasali, confirmed the demise in individual statements, characterizing it as a severe shock to both the council and the community.

The Lagos State Chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC), represented by spokesman Seye Oladejo, conveyed profound sorrow regarding her passing.

Oladejo referred to Rufai as a “promising figure within the APC” who exemplified “dedication, community service, and gender equity,” remarking that her brief tenure in office demonstrated her commitment to community advancement and loyalty to the party’s principles.

He extended his sympathies to Rufai’s family, the Ibeju-Lekki community, and her constituents, emphasizing that “her legacy of service, bravery, and vision will endure. ”
