An Ekiti State Chief Magistrate Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has ordered the remand of a 34-year-old woman, Deborah Ayeni, at the correctional centre in Ado Ekiti for the alleged theft of a day-old baby from a health centre in the state capital.

The prosecutor, Inspector Akinwale Oriyomi, told the court on Wednesday that the offence, which occurred on August 4, 2025, had drawn public sympathy and concern due to the rising cases of child theft in the state.

Oriyomi said the offence contravened Section 292 of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021, within the Ado Ekiti Magisterial District. He urged the court to grant his application for the remand of the defendant, stating that she was “reasonably suspected” to have committed the offence.

The prosecutor further informed the court that the duplicate case file had been forwarded to the Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

The defendant, represented by Stephen Ademuwagun, did not enter a plea during the proceedings.

Chief Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun granted the prosecution’s application and ordered Ayeni’s remand at the correctional centre. The case was adjourned until September 12 for mention.
